THE 900 PROJECT

How did The 900 Project Start?

Started in 2012 when a Short Term Missions trip from Black Rock Church drove around the village of Tilory Haiti and wanted to make a difference. They knew they couldn’t drive around somewhere that had so many needs and not do something.

This is how the first Round of The 900 Project started. Since June 2012, the team set a goal to raise money for 900 latrines to help eliminate Cholera in the village. Over the next 3 years God moved so fast that the team not only raised the money to build 900 latrines but 1,286!

With the financial partnership of Cheerful Heart Missions and The 900 Project, Cholera was totally eradicated! Praise God! When God gives a vision He will always provide and accomplish what He shows us, we just have to be Obedient to His call.

1. 900 Latrines

The 900 Project is a non-profit 501c3 organization that is raising money to help change the culture and community in a poor village in Tilory, Haiti.

2. Scholarship.

After the Latrine Project our team prayed and realized we weren’t done helping this community. Although each family has received a latrine there were still many needs and troubles that they face daily.

God has revealed to us that in order for them to THRIVE this village needs improvements in their corrupt educational system. In 2016, The 900 Project immediately took action.

After meeting with leaders in the village we handpicked 7 candidates to receive college scholarship funded by The 900 Project.

Each scholarship recipient will be getting their four year teaching degree, a visa for traveling and their required textbooks for school.

All have agreed to pursue teaching to come back to Tilory and restore the education system. In the past two years, we have seen such tremendous growth and success in the students, that in February 2019 we have committed to sending another 3 Haitian students to college!

On our trip in February we were able to meet these new 3 young men who will go to school. They are eager to get started and very grateful for this God given opportunity.

3. The Breadfruit Tree.

In partnership with the Trees That Feed Foundation, we have committed to bringing 5000+ breadfruit trees to the village of Tilory. The trees will be raised initially at one of Trees That Feed’s nurseries in Port Au Prince, and then transported to Tilory to be planted and cultivated.

This is a perfect project for Haiti due to the trees ability to grow at a rapid rate and need little maintenance. Haiti’s climate is ideal for this tropical tree that loves hot humid weather and does not require a lot of water and likes full sun. The tree needs to be planted in well drained soil which means Haiti’s land is perfect due to its rocky terrain.

Once the trees start growing they will produce fruit after 3 years. This will substantially change decades of starvation in the village of Tilory. The mass planting of 5,000 Breadfruit trees will help the economic growth by creating a market of buying and selling of Breadfruit.

Breadfruit contains essential vitamins and minerals. It is rich in riboflavin, iron, niacin, thiamin, iron and phosphorus. It contains minerals like potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese, selenium and phosphorus. It is low in saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium.

Like other tropical fruits, breadfruit also contains high amounts of calories. It contains small amounts of flavonoids and antioxidants in the form of xanthin and leutin. Breadfruit contains high amounts of Vitamin C.
